If there’s one thing you need to know about creating a course (or really any digital product, for that matter), it’s that it all starts with one thing: a curriculum.
Your curriculum is the literal backbone of your course content — it’s the guide to how you’ll structure your course, what you’ll mention in your voiceovers, and even what’s featured in your slide decks. You NEED a curriculum to create a course that will actually provide a transformation for your students.
And if you already have a 1:1 coaching framework, you have the base of your curriculum (it likely just needs to be built out).
So, what is a course curriculum? And what’s needed to create one?
Here’s what you want (and need) to know: what is a curriculum?
Curriculum, or curriculum development, is where you become known for your expertise. It’s the “planned, thoughtful, and deliberate course of actions that ultimately enhance the quality and impact of the learning experience” (def., Camosun College).
A curriculum is essentially putting your intellectual property and expertise into a container outside of your brain.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if it stays in your brain, no one else can access it unless they go directly to YOU — and while that’s great for your one-on-one client work, it’s a bit limiting when it comes to scaling. Any offer beyond your 1:1 requires curriculum development.
Your brain and the hours you have in a week are all too often the main limiting factors behind scaling. This means you’re losing your income potential and the impact you can have with your clients if the only way you can communicate your expertise is on Voxer and calls.
A course curriculum is where you become known for your expertise. It’s where your student results are still off the charts, even without high-proximity access to you.
It’s where your students are actually finishing their modules (and not leaving your course half-finished) and leaving five-star testimonials left and right.
*And yes, your course curriculum can be used to create more than just a course, and curriculum development can help create more than just digital products; it can help you expand your entire offer suite.
Step one: establish what your course is about, who your students are, and the transformation they’ll achieve (here’s a quick, free masterclass to help out).
Once you’ve established your end goal and dream students (not clients because your students are not the same as your 1:1 clients), you can start building your curriculum.
Your curriculum is going to consist of what your students absolutely need to know to achieve the desired transformation or results. Not what you think they need to know or even everything you know — but what they have to know, no more, no less.
If you’re building your curriculum from scratch and you’re ready to create your signature online course in less time (and with better results), I’ve made my course, Coaching to Curriculum, with you in mind!
If you already have a course and you want to create a course curriculum, but you’re not sure where to start, book a clarity call and find out what you — and your course — needs!
