Contrary to popular belief, service providers can create and sell a successful course, too — you don’t have to be a coach. Still, you might be thinking, “Why would I spend time creating a course when I can work with a client 1:1 and make more?”
To answer your question, first consider how many clients you must take in a month to hit your income goals — how many projects you have to book. Now, how do you plan for vacation? What if you want to take a month off? What if you want to scale your business back but continue to scale your income? A course helps you fill in those gaps and have an offer that’s not as high-proximity as your 1:1, leaving you more time to do what you want.
That’s the goal with these course ideas for copywriters; they’re here to help you find a starting point — a bit of inspiration — to start planning your own course.
I know you can WRITE, and you might think that your writing skills will result in your course flowing effortlessly. In reality, it WILL help, but creating a curriculum is a specific skill set that requires a slightly different shift from traditional copywriting.
The key is to look at it differently, to consider what goes into your course and curriculum, and have a specific outcome in mind for your students. With copywriting, you can add additional impactful resources, such as templates or examples, for your students to use and reference throughout your course.
The goal for course creation as a copywriter is to focus on acquiring a skill for a quantifiable outcome, at least for your starting point. Your course should aim to be evergreen and niched down a bit more, almost like “how to only write great copy ONCE.”
You’ll follow the exact step-by-step as other business owners and service providers when finalizing your course idea (officially getting it out of your Notes app), building your curriculum, and designing your slide decks (you can follow my recommended timeline and step-by-step in the Course Creation Checklist).
A course can do so much more than just offer an alternative to working with your 1:1 and still expand your capacity and scale your income. These ideas list some of the possible courses you can create; don’t limit yourself to only what’s on this list:
A signature course that provides the alternative to working with you 1:1; it’s the DIY version of your main services, like writing high-converting sales page copy or how to write the copy for your website’s core pages.
You could even create an entire course teaching students how to develop copywriter-quality website copy, including the higher arching principles of great copy, essentially establishing a skill that’s repeatable for them across various areas of copy!
A smaller, niched version of a signature course. Instead of teaching students how to write emails, you’re teaching them how to write a specific sequence of emails, like your welcome sequence or an upsell sequence.
Mini-courses can also focus on things that go into copywriting, like finding your brand voice or sales psychology.
A course doesn’t have to replace you — if you don’t want to sell a course, then don’t! Courses can also be used to improve your client experience and be your surprise and delight factor.
Create a course covering commonly asked questions or situations, such as walking through brand voice, updating your copy after project completion, or a bonus course on carrying or repurposing your copy to bring your messaging to other platforms.
With an improved and potentially streamlined client experience, you can lessen the amount of time spent on each project, giving you more time to book more clients or work on your passion project.
Before you can start building your course, you have to know what it’s about, who it’s for, and what your desired outcome is. What type of transformation will your students experience? What do they need to know to accomplish the outcome? Who do they need to become?
Once you have a better understanding of what you — and your students — need from your course, you can start building your curriculum and recording your videos!
